Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal guide

The API terminal, the federal zone, taxis, Ubers and the walk to Marina Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta’s cruise port is operated by ASIPONA (formerly API — the Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional). It sits in the Marina Vallarta district, about 10 km north of the old town. Ships dock alongside; there is no tendering. Understanding the layout of the federal zone will save you both time and money.

Stepping off the ship

You walk directly onto the pier and through a covered terminal building with duty-free shops, pharmacies and timeshare desks. The timeshare desks are persistent — a polite “no, gracias” and continued walking is all that is needed. Free Wi-Fi is patchy inside the terminal and reliable at the Marina cafés a short walk away.

The federal zone — why it matters

The pier and terminal are inside a federal port zone. Only licensed port taxis may pick up inside it, at fixed, posted rates. Rideshare vehicles cannot legally enter. Walk out through the main gate — about 8 minutes from the ship — and you are on Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio, where normal city taxis and rideshare pickups are legal and substantially cheaper.

Walking to Marina Vallarta

From the terminal gate it is a flat 10–12 minute walk to the Marina Vallarta boardwalk: restaurants, the lighthouse, boat charters and a supermarket. Turn left out of the gate, follow the sidewalk, cross at the pedestrian bridge. This is the single most useful thing a passenger can know — most of what people pay a taxi for is within walking distance.

Taxis: what things actually cost

Port taxis charge fixed zone rates displayed at the booth and are priced per vehicle, not per person. Confirm the fare before getting in. Street taxis outside the gate are typically 30–50 % cheaper for the same trip. Rideshare apps work well from outside the federal zone; set your pickup pin at the OXXO or the shopping plaza across the boulevard.

Indicative taxi rates from the terminal

Destination Port taxi Street taxi / rideshare Drive time
Marina Vallarta boardwalk $12 $5 5 min (or 12 min walk)
Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) $18 $9 10–15 min
Malecón & old town (Centro) $25 $13 20–30 min
Zona Romántica / Los Muertos beach $30 $16 25–35 min
PVR airport $15 $8 8 min
Nuevo Vallarta / Flamingos $38 $22 25–35 min
Punta de Mita $75 $48 50–65 min
Sayulita $95 $62 60–80 min

Rates are per vehicle (up to 4 passengers), in USD, as posted at the port taxi booth. They change seasonally — treat these as a sanity check, not a quotation. Street taxis outside the federal gate are usually cheaper.

Getting back on time

All-aboard is usually 30–60 minutes before departure — check your daily programme, not the port schedule. Traffic on the boulevard peaks between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.; add 20 minutes if you are coming from the old town. Ship’s time may differ from local time during daylight-saving transitions: your ship’s clock is the only one that counts.

Quick answers

Can I get an Uber from the cruise terminal in Puerto Vallarta?
Not from inside the port. The pier sits in a federal zone where only licensed port taxis may pick up. Walk out through the main gate — about eight minutes — and set your pickup pin on Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio, at the OXXO or the shopping plaza opposite. Rideshare is legal and much cheaper from there.
How far is the Malecón from the cruise port?
About 10 km south, a 20–30 minute drive depending on traffic. A street taxi from outside the gate costs around $13 per vehicle; a port taxi from inside is roughly $25. The local bus marked “Centro” costs about 10 pesos and takes 35 minutes.
Do cruise ships tender in Puerto Vallarta?
No. Puerto Vallarta has an alongside berth — you walk straight off the gangway onto the pier. The terminal can handle three large ships simultaneously, so no tendering is required regardless of how busy the day is.
What currency should I bring for a port day?
Pesos, in small notes. Dollars are accepted in the terminal and by tour operators but at a poor rate everywhere else. Withdraw pesos from a bank ATM (BBVA, Banorte, Santander) rather than the standalone machines in the terminal, which charge far more. Cards work in restaurants and shops; street stands and buses are cash only.
What happens if my excursion runs late and I miss the ship?
On any tour booked through us, our Back-to-Ship Guarantee applies: if our operation causes you to miss the departure, we pay your transport to the next port of call. Our tours are built to finish at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and your guide carries both the ship’s agent contact and ours. Independent taxis and tours you arrange yourself carry no such protection.
Is Puerto Vallarta safe for cruise passengers?
Yes. Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest cities in Mexico for visitors, and the tourist areas are heavily policed. The ordinary precautions apply — watch your belongings in crowds, use official taxis, do not leave drinks unattended. The most common problem passengers report is not crime but aggressive timeshare sales in and around the terminal.
